Nordic Competition Committee Meeting

May 1, 2004

Leavenworth, WA

Personnel present:

T.J. Owen (chairperson), Chris Clark (head coach), Steve Devin, Ben Husaby, Jeff Hashimoto, Peter Hutzel, Bruce Johnson, Scott Johnston, Dick Knowles.

            Junior Olympics Report;

Flash reported: That the somewhat smaller team made logistics much easier and that we should consider having either a small team or more coaches in the future.  Brenna did an exceptional job with the logistics.

The waxing went well this year partly due to Ben’s good working relationship with Swix.  Their support was very beneficial.

TJ: The kids need to become more wax savvy and knowledgeable so that they can be more helpful on race day.  This was discussed and generally felt that the task of education is best done at the club level so that coaches can deal with their own kids and skis.  At Jr Olympics the waxing job is big enough that it will be best to have the wax coaches do all the work maybe with some input from the knowledgeable kids.

Flash: Recommends that we send out a letter to all JO skiers and parents concerning a code of acceptable conduct by the skiers.  Also included in this would be recommendation to the parents as to how they can be supportive and helpful without making the coaches’ jobs more difficult.  Flash will draft this letter.

Ben reported on JO Financials:

PNSA JO skiers over paid into the JO account by $3146.  Swix is still owed about $1100 for wax but Ben has not gotten a bill yet.

We discussed what to do with the surplus.  After a vote it was decided to keep 10% to put into the PNSA JO general fund.  The remaining balance will be divided equally and refunded to the skiers.  This policy will be reviewed each year.

It was also decide to turn over the management of the JO money (not the General Fund) to Peter Hutzel who is the PNSA treasurer.  He will be responsible for segregating Nordic JO money and establishing any accounts necessary. MBSEF (namely Brenna Knowles) will still collect funds and keep track of all the payments.  She will be in contact with Peter so that PNSA can keep track of these funds on their books.

NRL Points:

            Long discussion on points list and the USSA system.

            After voting we resolved to:

1)     Use the USSA NRL points system

2)     Have Ben try to convince USSA (namely Luke Bodensteiner) to lower the fee they charge to race organizers so that in the poorly attended PNSA races only the licensed racers will be charges

3)     We agreed to subsidize the $100 race fee to USSA out of the JO general fund to make the points list usage less burdensome to the race organizers.

            Kids Drinking at Junior Olympics;

                        Several boys apparently were drinking after the last races at Lake Placid.

                        These kids were disciplined by MBSEF and the message seems to have

                        across to the kids.  This issue can be reinforced in the conduct letter

Flash will send out.
